Coverage

Coverage options, explained

Each type of life insurance solves a different problem. Here's a plain-language look at the main options I can help you review.

Term life insurance

Coverage for a set period — commonly 10, 15, 20, or 30 years — with a level death benefit for that term.

  • Often used to cover working years, a mortgage, or the years children are at home.
  • Coverage ends when the term ends unless the policy is renewed or converted, and renewal premiums are typically much higher.
  • Generally builds no cash value.

Whole life insurance

Permanent coverage designed to stay in force for life as long as required premiums are paid.

  • Premiums and death benefit are typically guaranteed by the contract.
  • Cash value accumulates over time; accessing it through loans or withdrawals reduces the death benefit.
  • Premiums are higher than comparable term coverage for the same face amount.

Indexed universal life (IUL)

Permanent coverage with flexible premiums where interest credited to cash value is linked to the performance of a market index.

  • You are not invested in the index or the market; credits are calculated by the insurance company using caps, participation rates, spreads, and a floor.
  • Non-guaranteed illustrated values are hypothetical and will differ from actual results.
  • Policy charges, cost of insurance, loans, and withdrawals can reduce values and may cause the policy to lapse.

Final expense

Smaller permanent policies intended to help cover funeral, burial, and related end-of-life costs.

  • Face amounts are typically modest and application questions are usually simplified.
  • Some products include a graded or limited benefit period in the first years.
  • Availability and underwriting vary by insurance company and state.
